If you’re new to the podcast, Corey (@coreyrstarr) and Jonathan (@berkreviews) both realized they had a ton of movies they’d never seen, but really wanted to knock off their gap list. In an effort to work through their respective lists, they started this podcast to ensure they at least check one new film off the list almost every week.
Thus, for a film to qualify for Movie Club one or both of them have to have never seen it or at least not seen it for a long time. They also thought it would be more fun to create themes from which they can choose their movies for each episode.
Each episode features an in-depth review of the movie for the week initially spoiler free and then diving in completely after a spoiler warning. Before getting into the review Jonathan and Corey discuss what other movies they’ve seen since the last episode as well as anything else they feel like discussing.
January 2019 – Out of this World
For a movie to qualify for this months theme it must feature some element of alien life coming to Earth or people leaving on a trip in space. While Corey and Jonathan have seen many movies that could qualify, there are still some big ones they have missed.
Week 1: The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976)
Corey selected the first movie on 2019 and it features the Star Child himself, David Bowie. The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976) is directed by Nicolas Roeg and stars David Bowie, Rip Torn, and Candy Clark. Neither Jonathan nor Corey had seen this film, but both were excited to see what it was. Listen to the episode to see how they ended up feeling about the movie.
Week 2: Solaris (2002)
Jonathan picked Steven Soderbergh’s film Solaris (2002) starring George Clooney, Natascha McElhone, Ulrich Tukur, Viola Davis, and Jeremy Davies. He purchased it a while back and just hasn’t managed to get to it. Clooney is an actor he often enjoys so it made sense to give this film a watch. Corey also hadn’t seen it so that’s two weeks in a row they both get to knock one off their gap lists.
Week 3: Starman (1984)
Jonathan was just two years old when Starman (1984) hit theaters and neither he nor Corey has seen it. The film is directed by John Carpenter and has a cast that includes Jeff Bridges, Karen Allen, and Charles Martin Smith. Since both Corey and Jonathan enjoy the films by John Carpenter is makes perfect sense to add this to Out of this World Month.
Week 4: Sunshine (2007)
Danny Boyle is a direct that both Jonathan and Corey tend to connect with. Sunshine (2007) is a film that Jonathan hadn’t even heard of until they started doing this podcast a few years back. Considering the incredible casts that includes Cillian Murphy, Rose Byrne, and Chris Evans it a shock that he hasn’t seen it. This is one he can’t wait to remove from the gap list and hopes it finds a place on another list.
