Review 311: Inferno (2016)

As an adult, Angels and Demons was the first book I decided to read for pleasure. It lit a fire in me and I read all of Dan Brown’s books at the time. He’d just released the Da Vinci Code so there weren’t too many to read. I saw both the other films and I felt compelled to see Inferno. Even though I hadn’t read this book, the film was about what I anticipated it would be. Inferno earns the Decent Watch rating.

Inferno - Berk ReviewsInferno doesn’t really bring the heat, but it’s not too bad of a film.

Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) wakes up in the hospital in Florence with no recollection of how he got there. Dr. Sienna Brooks (Felicity Jones) helps him flee from a police officer who is shooting at him. Langdon soon realizes he is in possession of information about a global plot to wipe out much of humanity. The two must race across Europe while be tracked by several parties who all have an interest in the virus.

Inferno - Berk ReviewsMy biggest issue with the film is Ben Foster’s character, Bertrand Zobrist, plot. He is a mad genius who feels the human race must be thinned in order to save the planet. He’s created a virus called Inferno that will infect 90% of the human race. That’s the plan. No idea if everyone will die or why it won’t infect the other 10%. It’s the same in a lot of these films, and I wish they didn’t have to make the stakes so high all the time. I’d be content if he had to solve a riddle to win the lottery.

A solid cast, but somewhat slow story that never felt as thrilling as it needed to

Inferno - Berk ReviewsHanks is great as always. If you’re a fan of his it’s hard to say he’s bad in anything. I rather enjoyed Felicity Jones performance and it made me more excited about Rogue 1. Really, the whole cast did a great job with Irrfan Khan, Omar Sy, and Sidse Babett Knudsen. This film uses lots of hallucinations early that Langdon is experiencing as the result of head trauma. I’m not sure it was the best method of storytelling. I think the Robert Langdon story wants to be Indiana Jones, but never brings the excitement it wants to.

I was super into the books and read The Lost Symbol. However, I never made it to Inferno and I’m not sure if the book would have been better. This film isn’t horrible, but it’s also not great. It feels like it is exactly two hours long. Not in a good way. Inferno isn’t enough of an action movie nor is it a great mystery.

  1. I did some research on the Historical data of the movie.Let’s start with the growth of population in History which is the main conspiracy in the movie.Acording to wikipedia the global population has grown from 1 billion in 1800 to 7 billion in 2012 so in 212 years multiplied 7 times !!! I have also done research about (Dante’s Inferno) by Dante Alighier, secrets of Giorgio Vasari’s paintings in particular (Cerca trova) from The Battle of Scannagallo in the Palazzo Vecchio of Florence in translation (“Search Find”) In the movie Langdon also talk about Enrico Dandolo (anglicised as Henry Dandolo and Latinized as Henricus Dandulus) and Black Plague also know as Bubonic plague or Black Death,in total, the plague may have reduced the world population from an estimated 450 million down to 350–375 million in the 14th century. In my opinion everything from the movie is plausible you can read all my research on my blog.
