Berkreviews BS HIGH @ Tribeca 2023

BS High is an HBO documentary directed by Martin Desmond Roe and Travon Free that grabs its audience and throws them into the deep end. At first, the audience thinks there is no way the story of this documentary can get any scarier than that initial plunge of cold water that rushed up their noses. Then, just as they start to catch their breath, the film slams them back underwater time and time again, as more details about BS High – and its founder, Roy Johnson – are revealed. In other words, this is a film that constantly finds new ways to keep knocking the wind out of its audience, as this insane story burrows deeper into the depths of despair for what passes as “humanity.”

For those who are unfamiliar with this story, it basically becomes national news after Bishop Sycamore High School played the top-ranked IMG Academy on ESPN. No one knew who BSHS was, and it didn’t take long into the game to see that they were outmatched. In what many would consider a bold move, Roy Johnson sits to be interviewed for this documentary. The origin of Bishop Sycamore unfolds, and the immense deception held by Johnson is unpacked, exposing flaws in many systems with education and scholastic sports.

Fans of documentaries like Three Identical Strangers or Tickled will find the structure of storytelling familiar. Every time the audience thinks they have a grip on what this film is and exactly what Johnson is being accused of, a new wrinkle is introduced. It is a compelling method for revealing the story over time, as it doesn’t allow for the audience to become complacent or indifferent to the subject. One detail that makes this particular story so upsetting is the misleading of young men with promises of dream fulfillment.

The movie features great interviews and stylish graphics to introduce the variety of people appearing. Players on the team go from discussing their initial excitement at the opportunity to play for a school boasting to be similar to IMG Academy, to later recount the harsh reality their commitment to the school led them to. The discussions with the various reporters and investigators will butt up against Johnson’s claims at times. However, it’s disturbing how Johnson will admit to certain things with a gleeful smile. If he thought the film would paint him in a good light, he’ll be sad when he watches it.

BS High is well-made and shines a light on a multitude of topics. This specific story is horrifying but should open the eyes to the dangerous lack of regulations regarding our youth. These young men were manipulated and put in danger, and this film does a very good job of telling their story.

BS High is playing at Tribeca on June 14.
