Movie Review: Horns (2013)

Continuing working through the suggestions from my seniors, Horns was a film that had caught my attention a while back but I hadn’t seen. The film is directed by Alexandre Aja and is an interesting take on a revenge story. It plays at a mystery that seemed somewhat predictable, but still felt engaging and entertaining.

Horns is an interesting film with a great performance from Radcliffe

Ig Perrish (Daniel Radcliffe) is accused of murdering his girlfriend Merrin Williams (Juno Temple) after rejecting his marriage proposal. He is losing hope that the real killer will be found and forsakes God. He awakens with horns growing out of his head and powers that he slowly uses to get the answers he seeks.

Horns (2013) - Berk ReviewsMany child actors either burn out or can’t get past the iconic character they were. It would have been easy for Radcliffe to fade away after the Harry Potter franchise ended. He’s set financially and didn’t have to try and break out of the Harry Potter character. The roles he’s selected have been interesting and often far away from the lovable wizard. His performance in this movie is at the same caliber as his others. He’s relatable and even with horns and a hoodie on he brings a credibility to the movie with his acting.

Horns (2013) - Berk ReviewsThe story in the film is interesting. It seems that the commentary the film might be making would benefit from a second viewing. He is a fallen and had lived a good life up until everyone believes him to be a murderer. The love story between him and Merrin is very storybook up until the break-up. Something he never sees coming, but her death eats at him so much. The story is sad and yet heartfelt at times. There is some dark elements of humor that play into it as a result of his powers.

Final thoughts…

Horns is definitely not a film for everyone. It will infringe on some religious beliefs and it’s darker subject matter can be hard to take. The story is interesting and the performances, especially from Radcliffe, are good. Horns earns the Decent Watch rating.
