Movie Review: Miss Stevens (2016)

Miss Stevens is a film that is an interesting character study of a teacher and her students. Directed by Julia Hart, who also shares a writing credit with Jordan Horowitz, this quiet, introspective film offers a look at Miss Stevens that also feels like an inside look at the person behind the title of teacher. The performances are allowed to shine and the story is satisfying.

Miss Stevens is currently available on Netflix

Miss Stevens - Berk ReviewsMiss Stevens (Lily Rabe), a high school English teacher, takes three students to a three day drama competition. Billy (Timothée Chalamet), Margot (Lili Reinhart), and Sam (Anthony Quintal) are very different, but are united by the drama club. The interactions that the four have on this trip is entertaining and insightful, and a very real look at humanity. Each character has an issue, but the film focuses on Miss Stevens and Billy. Miss Stevens is sad and is clearly going through something. The stress of work, being along, and dealing with some unresolved issues makes her do some questionable things. The wall she usually keeps up at work has fallen while on this trip despite having students. Lily Rabe’s performance is exceptional. She hits all of the emotions perfect and is extremely relatable. Even at times when she makes decisions that are clearly not the ones she should be making, the film plays out in a way that’s completely believable

Miss Stevens - Berk ReviewsTimothée Chalamet delivers an outstanding performance particularly his monologue he delivers in the competition. It’s interesting to see an actor have to be an actor in a film as it seems like it should be second nature. However, doing a theatrical style performance is often different from film, and Chalamet does a terrific job with it. More so, his character is said to have a behavioral disorder that he takes medication for. As the film progresses, his character begins to show the impact of the disorder and it is natural, believable, and nuanced. The conflict in the film is subtle and in no way melodramatic.
