Resident Evil: The Final Chapter is exactly what anyone who has followed the franchise should expect. Alice (Milla Jovovich) returns to Raccoon City to re-enter the Hive. She’s been given a tip that a cure that will wipe out the T-virus exists and she can finally end the plague of monsters set loose by Umbrella ten years before.
Resident Evil: The Final Chapter is…well, it’s in theaters.
Paul W.S. Anderson delivers what is being marketed as the final film in the Resident Evil franchise. It’s an erratically cut action movie from beginning to end. The film does offer closure for the fans of the franchise, but doesn’t offer much in the way of great action or awesome zombie moments. Jovovich is a reliable and believable action star, but between the lighting and the rapid cuts it’s hard to really see what she’s doing. It makes sense in some ways, but it doesn’t make for enjoyable viewing.
Iain Glen reprises his role as Dr. Isaacs and is set-up as the big bad in the film. Essentially from Alice’s first drink of water from the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool the film goes balls to the wall action. Alice is trying to get back to Raccoon City and there are tons of obstacles in the way. The monsters are decently looking CG and the sound mixing is overwhelming and terrifying.
Final Thoughts:
Resident Evil: The Final Chapter is what the franchise has always been. It’s a loosely adapted film from a video game franchise that offers enough references to keep fans coming back. Yet, it does nothing to add, improve, or live up to other action films or zombie movies that have come before or after. In all honesty, you’re money would be better spent buying Train to Busan, John Wick, or Mad Max Fury Road. Yet, if you’re determined to see Resident Evil it earns the Not a Total Waste of Time rating.
