I’ve been watching lots of new movies lately so I thought I would go for some rewatches. Shaun of the Dead is one that I love so decided to pop it in and watch it again. I’ve become a huge fan of Edgar Wright and this is the movie that started it all for me. Twelve years later and it’s still extremely great. I actually think I liked it more this time and give Shaun of the Dead the Must See rating.
Shaun of the Dead is a Must See movie
Shaun (Simon Pegg) is in a bit of a rut and is about to lose his girlfriend Liz (Kate Ashfield) as a result. The only one who seems to like Shaun as he is, is his best friend Ed (Nick Frost). When a zombie outbreak strikes, Shaun seizes the opportunity to try and make something of himself and sets out to rescue Liz and his mother.
Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, and Edgar Wright just work for me. From the visual comedy to the acting and to the writing, it just hits over and over again. I care about the characters and I love the way their personalities are revealed. Even how zombies are alluded to with the normal routines of the characters in the film. Wrights style just makes this movie so perfect. His sense of visual storytelling is quick and often adds to the humor. I can’t wait for him to make more movies.
I think the best part of the movie, and this is hard because there are many that could qualify, is the revelation of the zombies. Shaun is flipping through the channels and the disconnected sentences form to tell a summary of what the movie will be. Shaun is starting to catch on when Ed hidden by a curtain points out that there is a girl in the garden. That leads to them discovering the undead and their first kills. Even though, it takes a bit of time to actually get the kill they are going for.
If you’ve been sleeping on this movie it’s time to pick it up. It’s a blind buy. In fact, if you can find the Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy then buy it. All three films are fantastic and while you’re ordering it snag a copy of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. I absolutely love his cinematic style and Simon Pegg and Nick Frost crack me up.
