After seeing Star Wars Episode VI, I wanted to see John Boyega is something else. Seeing that Edgar Wright was an executive producer for Attack the Block sold me on the purchase. I wasn’t into the film at first, but it soon won me over quite a bit. It’s got some good elements and Boyega does give a strong performance. Attack the Block gets the Decent Watch rating.
Attack the Block isn’t quite Shaun of the Dead, but it wants to be
Moses (John Boyega) is the leader of a small gang in South London. While mugging Sam (Jodie Whittaker), something crashes from the sky into the car they’re positioned next to. A creature emerges and attacks Moses but the group kills it. It’s not too much longer that more aliens follow, but they’re bigger and angrier.
There is definitely some comedy in the film and it may be that I need to watch this a few more times to really appreciate it all. The cast of teens are enjoyable with Alex Esmail, Leeon Jones, Franz Drameh, and Simon Howard. Nick Frost shows up as a pot dealer, viagra online which was pretty great. However, I’d say he’s under used. Boyega’s character is initially not likeable and that had me worried. Luckily, the character’s arc is a great one and by the end he resembled a younger version of Finn.
The aliens in this film are very interesting. There is definitely some Shaun of the Dead familiarity, but doesn’t quite hit the fun level. Director Joe Cornish did a good job and includes some commentary about inner city London. Yet, there seems to be something holding the film back. It’s not action enough nor is it funny enough. However, the Sci-Fi is pretty solid and the glowing teeth are awesome.
Ultimately, the film didn’t live up to my hopes, but I found it entertaining enough. John Boyega definitely has some talent and I can’t wait to see anything he’s apart of. I’d say Attack of the Block is a rental or buy it on sale to check it out. I think watching it multiple times might make it funnier though as I always find Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz funnier with each viewing.
