A proud moment for any film lover is sharing movies with their children. Halloween was a film I’ve been waiting to show her since she expressed interest in horror films. It had been a long time since I had seen the original. Halloween still holds up after all these years earning it the Must See horror rating.
Halloween is a horror classic.
Little Michael Myers (Will Sandin) stabbed his sister to death and was sentenced to 15 years in a mental hospital. Myers (Tony Moran) escapes and returns to Haddonfield to kill more, but Dr. Sam Loomis (Donald Pleasence) is in pursuit.
The music in this film is so iconic and it still gets me. Despite be sampled by dozens of rappers at this point, the music still really sets the tone. The impending dread of Michael Myers is established by the music. His mask and stoic body language makes him all the more terrifying. Loomis mentions his infinite patience and that is clear as he stalks Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis).
Loomis is my favorite
I really love Dr. Loomis in this story. He is such an interesting character. Loomis has inside information about Michael Myers and blames himself for his escape. He is confident that Myers will return and is a monster. Despite everyone doubting him, he continues his pursuit of the crazed killer. Director John Carpenter does a great job telling the story while leaving out lots of details. There is no explanation given as to why Michael decided to act this night and attack the people he did. It will be explained as the movies go forward, but those details aren’t needed for the movie to achieve it’s purpose. Rob Zombie’s version doesn’t trust that the audience can be entertained without all of the explanations and details. I think that is what makes this a superior version of the film.
Halloween has an iconic character and really helps establish the slasher genre. Myers is relentless and Jamie Lee Curtis plays a great lead. She is smart and tough even though some of her choices demonstrate otherwise. If you’ve avoided this film then it’s one to check out. It has been in my rotation for years and still is likely to stay there.
