My daughter, Corey, and I went to see the newest Tim Burton film. We were concerned that Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children wouldn’t live up to our expectations. However, we were all pleasantly surprised. I give Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children the Not Quite Golden, Ponyboy rating.
Peculiar Children is a fun and visual pleasing time at the movies
Jake (Asa Butterfield) discovers his grandfather dead body with signs of a struggle. It leads him to clues to a mystery that spans time searching for truth in his grandfather’s stories. Upon finding Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, he learns of their wonderful powers and the dangers that lurk.
Asa Butterfield did not start off great. He felt a little bit bland when the film first started. I initially was really concerned if I could take the whole movie with him like that. Luckily, as the film went on he really fit the character perfectly. I think Ella Purnell, who plays Emma Bloom, really helped liven the film up. Her chemistry with Butterfield made his vanilla acting seems less bland quite a bit. Realistically, the kids are all perform very well. They are definitely extremely interesting and make the story enjoyable.
Eva Green and Samuel L. Jackson are both really enjoyable as well. Green plays Miss Perigrine and commands the screen when she is on it. Jackson plays Barron who is pretty funny on screen and at the same time scary. Hiss presence is large and a little over the top, but it fits the character. The entire cast really does a good job of creating the world of the film. Burton’s style shows through and fits naturally with this story.
I truly enjoyed the story and most of the acting in this film. The visual effects are good, but there are scenes that look a little too fake. Butterfield was probably the weakest link out of the main cast, but luckily his character and the ones he is surrounded by make it work. It may be a little scary for some younger kids, but my daughter loved it.
