Review 245: Waitress (2007)

I believe Michael Sanchez recommended Waitress to me at the beginning of the year. I bought it back then, but just finally watched it. The movie has interesting color choices and has great performances. I give Waitress the Not Quite Golden, Ponyboy rating.

Waitress - Berk ReviewsWaitress is an interesting story full of lots of cool visuals

Jenna (Keri Russell) is married to an awful, controlling man named Earl (Jeremy Sisto). She finds out that she is pregnant with Earl’s baby she is devastated as she fears she’ll never escape his clutches. However, She just wants to make pies and be happy. She meets a newcomer to her town and falls into an unlikely relationship as her last attempt to find joy.

Waitress - Berk ReviewsI’m a big fan of Nathan Fillion who plays the newcomer, Dr. Jim Pomatter. The description of this film sounds like it could be a strictly sad film, but there is a light of light hearted elements to it. Keri Russell is really great in this film and the relationship that develops with Fillion is wonderful. I love his delivery of dialogue and the explosiveness of their connection.

Waitress - Berk ReviewsThe colors in this movie are pretty surreal. Often they are very vibrant and stand out especially with the sad tones the film offers. It seems to maybe imply hope or that the rest of her world isn’t horrible, but Earl ruins so much of it. The colors at the end of the film really get vibrant and almost glow. Visually the film often looks like a movie set, but that seems to add to the dreamlike quality with the colors.

My last thoughts on Waitress

The story in Waitress is both tragic and comical. The scenes with Earl often made me cringe as he was so despicable. Yet, her attitude about it has a lightheartedness to it at time. It’s definitely a different take on a romantic comedy of sorts and I’m glad I watched it. This is definitely my favorite performance from Keri Russell. The ending is a very positive one and really brought home the happy ending idea.
