My daughter asked me about Napoleon Dynamite the other day so we decided to watch it. I had mixed feelings about the film from my previous watching, but it’s been probably eight years. After watching it again, it turns out that I liked it more than I remembered. It’s not the most amazing film, but it’s definitely got some funny moments. I give Napoleon Dynamite the Decent Watch rating.
Napoleon Dynamite is quirky and fun
Napoleon (Jon Heder) is the ultimate awkward teenager who is alienated by most of his peers. He lives with his brother, Kip (Aaron Ruell) and currently Uncle Rico (Jon Gries) who don’t make his home life any better than school. Soon, He befriends Pedro (Efren Ramirez), a new student, and helps him run for class president.
Jon Heder can be a little hard to take at times. Yet, it’s hard to hate some of the line delivery he gives as Napoleon. Also, his dance moves at the end of the film are probably my favorite part. He really kills it! The character is definitely a prominent one from the 2000s thanks to his awkwardness and immature points of view on reality.
The film feels older than it is, but it’s short film to feature story is the indie dream. Directed and written by Jared Hess, the film has a definite style about itself. From Napoleon’s odd printed t-shirts featuring horses, cats (I think), and other animals to his suit for the dance, the style of the characters film feel rather older. I’m not sure if that’s what Idaho is like, but it definitely gives the film a specific style.
It isn’t always good to revisit a film as often time isn’t kind to films. However, this time it was actually better with the second viewing. I’m glad my daughter really enjoyed the film and it was fun watching it with her. Even though Uncle Rico creeped both of us out. I’m glad I didn’t have an uncle like that guy!
