Review 231: Slow Learners (2015)

I’m a fan of comedies and often find romantic ones entertaining. My wife had watched Slow Learners like a month ago on Netflix. She was adamant that I watch with her. I’m glad that I agreed as it’s a pretty funny at a vulgar take on the rom-com. I give Slow Learners a Decent Watch rating.

Slow Learners - Berk ReviewsSlow Learners is a fun attempt at a predictable romantic comedy

Jeff (Adam Pally) and Anne (Sarah Burns) are two friends who are struggling with finding love. They decide to change their style in an attempt to find love. It leads to a summer full of alcohol and sex, but does it satisfy what they’re looking for.

Slow Learners - Berk ReviewsI really loved Adam Pally in this film. The opening sequence depicts him on what appears to be a blind date. The date isn’t going well and he asks the girl to tell him why. The cavalcade of insults she hurls at him are only comedically out done by his reactions. The scene ends with him throwing up on her. It’s really funny and sets up his character very well.

Slow Learners - Berk ReviewsSarah Burns is a little harder to take at times in the film. She’s funny as well, but her character does drive me crazy at times. Pally does evolve a bit into a “bad boy” at times and it is primarily believable. Sarah’s transformation is a little less natural. The two on screen together really works. Their is clear chemistry between the two of them, but that kind of makes the plot a little predictable.

The film works well as a rom-com, but doesn’t really offer anything new to the genre. It does have some memorable moments like when Anne is spouting curse words out of her car window. Nevertheless, it’s not a film you have to see. However, if you’re looking for a funny movie to check out on Netflix, and the kids are asleep, then it’s a solid watch.
