I spent a good chunk of my life determined to be a professional musician. When I saw the trailer for Sing Street I was really interested, but it never played near me. I decided to just buy it on Vudu and I am extremely happy that I did. Sing Street is definitely a Must See movie.
Sing Street is one of my favorite movies so far this year…maybe ever!
Conor (Ferdia Walsh-Peelo) is a boy growing up in Dublin during the 1980’s. His family is struggling financially, his new school is unwelcoming, and his older brother, Brendan (Jack Reynor) is his only source of friendship. That is until he sees Raphina (Lucy Boynton) and offers to put her in his band’s music video. The only catch is he now has to form a band.
Sing Street is written and directed by John Carney. He is no stranger to music theme movies having directed Begin Again and Once. I haven’t seen either of those films, but they’ve been on my radar. After seeing Sing Street I’m more likely to see his other films. The story core of the story is familiar, but the journey that Conor is on is full of so much substance.
The Talent of the film
The film features a lot of great talent that seems to be primarily new. Accompanying Walsh-Peelo, Reynor, and Boynton are Maria Goyle Kennedy, Aidan Gillen, Kelly Thornton, Don Wycherley, Mark McKenna, and others that complete the band. I story revolves around Conor so we rarely see anything without him or his music and that is not a bad thing. Conor is extremely likable and perfectly cast. The band members are all great and are great accompaniment to Conor. I really love the scenes where Conor and Eamon (McKenna) are writing the songs. Eamon is a talented kid with an odd rabbit fixation and really seems to teach Conor a lot about music.
The core relationship is Brendan and Conor. Brendan is Conor’s mentor, father figure, and inspiration in many ways. Reynor gives an outstanding performance and really helps hit some important emotional beats. He’s passion for music and the arts really influences Conor throughout the film. He definitely is the reason for Conor’s decision to use the idea of a music video to woo Raphina who proclaims herself a model. The love story between Raphina and Conor is great and works really well as the music narrates the stages of their relationship.
I love the soundtrack for this film
Speaking of the music, this film really brings some amazing original songs. I already added the soundtrack to my Google Play music library. A lot of my favorite moments in the film revolve around the performance of the music, the writing of the music, and the filming of the music videos. The band starts with almost no goal and their music refines as they become Sing Street. It’s the best movie I can remember of a band going from a bunch of scrubs to a unified front.
This may be my favorite film of the year and I think I’m making it my goal to make people watch it. It’s a shame that this film didn’t get more play in theaters. It features some great performances, some 80’s nostalgia, awesome music, and a really great story. It’s literally everything that I want in a movie.
