I am trying to watch the films by directors I love that I missed. Jackie Brown is one of two Quentin Tarantino films I haven’t seen so I ordered some yellow curry chicken and put it on. I knew a few members of the cast, but I was pleasantly surprised to see Robert De Niro. I actually liked the film a lot and give it the Not Quite Golden, Ponyboy rating.
Jackie Brown is a crazy crime thriller with some great performances
Jackie Brown (Pam Grier) is a middle-aged woman who finds herself in the middle of a gun smuggler and the ATF. She has the potential to either make a profit or lose her life.
I don’t believe I’ve seen Pam Grier in anything although I’m familiar with her role as Foxy Brown. She is fantastic in this film and her connection with Robert Forster who plays Max Cherry is really great on screen. The power she is able to emanate as she walks towards him is impressive. She owns the screen when she is on it, and it works really well with the character.
Samuel L. Jackson is my second favorite part of this movie. Tarantino and Jackson always manage to make me love a movie. Jules is my favorite part of Pulp Fiction and Major Marquis Warren is my favorite part of Hateful Eight. Ordell Robbie is another great character for Jackson who spouts some pretty funny lines with his usual blend of curse words.
I’ve stated that I’m a Tarantino fan a few times. I really love his ability to write dialogue. The sequence in this film Ordell is showing Louis (Robert De Niro) a video featuring bikini clad women using guns as a way of showing off his merchandise is great. There are a lot of lines Ordell says that are extremely memorable especially, “AK-47. The very best there is. When you absolutely, positively got to kill every mother f*&$er in the room, accept no substitutes.” The quote hold more weight now than it did in ‘97.
I really liked this film a lot. It’s a bit long, but it’s a really solid story with some great performances. The last Tarantino film I haven’t seen is Death Proof. Hopefully that one will be as solid a movie.
