Review 162: A.C.O.D. (2013)

A.C.O.D. - Berk ReviewsI’m a huge fan of Adam Scott. Actually, I love sarcasm and most people who can successfully deliver it, and Adam Scott nails that style. I decided to watch A.C.O.D. mainly because of his leading role. I didn’t know who the entire cast was, but I enjoyed the film. I believe A.C.O.D. gets the Decent Watch rating.

A.C.O.D – Adult Children of Divorce is pretty funny!

Carter (Adam Scott) has been the go between of his parents Hugh (Richard Jenkins) and Melissa (Catherine O’Hara) always protecting his brother Trey (Clark Duke). He discovers he was part of a study on divorced children when he was a kid and is enlisted in a follow-up by Dr. Judith (Jane Lynch). This discovery plus Trey’s upcoming wedding send Carter’s safe life spiraling out of control.

A.C.O.D. - Berk ReviewsThe highlight of the film is definitely Adam Scott. His dry, sarcastic wit especially when interacting with Jane Lynch or his character’s parents. It’s hard for me not to find joy in his performances after watching all of Parks and Recreation. Mary Elizabeth Winstead plays his girlfriend Lauren and it was a different role than I’ve seen her in before.

A.C.O.D. - Berk ReviewsThe film fails for me with pacing and the overall story concept. It seems it wants to take the idea of divorce and the impact it has on the children and how those children grow up. It’s not a new concept, but the tone the film takes with it seems to vary. Most of the reactions are over the top and often feels more mocking than sympathetic towards the plight of the A.C.O.D. Then other moments feel very sincere about the struggle that these adult children of divorce go through. The after credits consists of interviews asking people about their experience with divorce and their current opinion on marriage.

The film isn’t horrible or anything, but it feels like it could have been a bit stronger overall. If you’re a fan of Adam Scott then this is a great showcase for him. Otherwise, A.C.O.D. is one you could definitely skip and not miss out on too much.
