As per usual, I have to see the comic book movies. One of my favorite animated series from my childhood is the X-Men, so I’ve seen most of the franchise in the theater. X-Men:Apocalypse wasn’t perfect, but had some of the best moments from the comic book, but suffers from some cheesy acting in a few points. I give X-Men:Apocalypse the Decent Watch Rating.
Apocalypse has some fun moments, but isn’t perfect.
The first mutant, Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac), awakens and begins seeking powerful mutants in order to fulfill his purpose of ruling the earth. Professor Xavier (James McAvoy) and his X-Men must figure out how to defeat this god-like mutant who has even convinced Magneto (Michael Fassbender) to join his fight.
Evan Peters as Quicksilver repeats his performance from Days of Future’s Past and easily has the best moment in the film. The Fox version of Quicksilver is amazing and Peters manages to bring a combination of arrogance and humor to his role. Director Bryan Singer’s ability to demonstrate Quicksilver’s speed is both visually impressive and awesome to watch. Also, Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee) was great just like he was in X-2. I love his teleporting fight style and it works really well on screen. Unfortunately, all of the characters weren’t quite so great.
I didn’t like Angel (Ben Hardy) character in this film, Psylocke (Olivia Munn) was basically wasted, and Isaac’s Apocalypse had some moments that felt a bit goofy. He screams in frustration at one point and it’s supposed to be scary, but it made me laugh a bit. Maybe it was the costume choices or the extra long film, but I didn’t love every moment of the film.
However, there are several moments that had the comic nerd in me extremely excited to see on screen. I won’t ruin it for you, but if you love the X-Men there will be some moments that get you pumped up and totally make the movie worthwhile. If you’re not a fan, it still has some good acting from the returning big names like James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, and Jennifer Lawerence, but can drag a little bit. I liked this more than Batman V. Superman, but much less than Civil War.
