Review 150: Hush (2016)

Hush - Berk ReviewsI’d heard some good things about Hush, which is currently available on Netflix streaming. I hadn’t heard any specifics, but that it was a really good horror film. After watching it, I have to say it lived up to the hype and I was really into the movie from beginning to end. I give Hush the Must See rating for sure.

Hush brings the tension

Maddie (Kate Siegel) is a deaf writer who has chosen to live a life of solitude in her home in the woods. However, she must fight for her life in silence when a masked killer appears at her window and decides to have some fun.

Hush - Berk ReviewsKate Siegel stars and co-wrote the film with director Mike Flanagan. She is does a great job playing this brilliant character who finds herself in a horrifying situation. The film does a great job of creating empathy for the character. There are moments where we hear what Maddie hears and it’s impactful.

Hush - Berk ReviewsThe masked man is played by John Gallagher, Jr., who has been great in Short Term 12 and 10 Cloverfield Lane and doesn’t disappoint in this movie. He is sadistic and intelligent and a perfect antagonist in this movie. There is a moment when he has to think through a big problem and it’s really interesting how it plays out. I don’t want to spoil the movie, but I think you’ll know the scene when you see it.

The opening shot of the woods is really great and there are some really interesting moments. When we see Maddie’s inner thoughts late in the film I really love it. It works perfectly to convey the message they wanted to share.

I enjoyed this movie so much. I found the lack of dialogue making me narrate and express my concern out loud far more frequently than I usually do. It’s definitely one to turn the lights out and enjoy.
