This is one many comic book nerds and movie goers have been waiting for! Captain America: Civil War is finally here with tons of praise being thrown around by critics and movie lovers alike. I went with a bunch of my awesome films students, one movie going friend, and Mike Sanchez, who’ll likely write a review on this too. There were concerns that have been increased after this comic films have become more commonplace that they may get stale or become too bloated with characters (looking at your BvS), but Civil War does it right. I loved so much of this film that I can confidently say it’s a Must See.
A Civil War between two great heroes!
While the Avengers have saved the planet many times over, nations can’t help but notice the collateral damage left in their wake. Politicians want the Avengers to work for them rather than be a group of vigilantes and Captain America (Chris Evans) and Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) are split on which side is correct.
The big Avenger’s stars are all great in this film, but they’re by no means the standouts. Tom Holland has brought one of my favorite comic book characters to the big screen in the best way imaginable. Here is a young kid playing an iconic character, probably too soon by most people’s standards, sharing the screen with superstars and manages to steal the show. His interactions with Downey are fantastic and the Spider-man that we see on-screen is the Spider-man from the comics.
One of the other stand-outs was Chadwick Boseman and a great introduction to Black Panther. The character comes out in a big way and really makes his mark on the film. The first fight scene with him and the Winter Soldier is fantastic. Out of costume, T’Challa is powerful on-screen and his conversations with Natasha (Scarlett Johansson) are really great. Paul Rudd needs to be mentioned as he really fits perfectly.
There are a lot of great scenes in this film and directors Anthony and Joe Russo nailed the pacing of the action and dialogue. The story moves quickly, but never feels chaotic or confusing. Things feel organic in the flow of the story and the film is extremely satisfying in both story and action. The big fight scene at the airport teased in the trailer is so much better than I anticipated. There is a lot going on and it feels like a comic book panel comes to life…IN A GOOD WAY! Spider-man shines, Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) is great, and Anthony Mackie’s visual fighting is one of my favorite parts of the film.
This movie doesn’t need my praise to make it successful, but it has really earned it. There is so much greatness in Captain America: Civil War that I may end up seeing it again even though I won’t be able to write another review. It’s too good to not see in IMAX and I’ll likely end up there at some point. I can’t wait to see the Spider-man solo movie and I’m excited for Doctor Strange. Share your thoughts in the comments!
