Review 120: Moon (2009)

Moon stars Sam Rockwell, which I am a big fan of, and I have been trying to set up a viewing of this film with a good friend. Tonight seemed like a good night to pull it off so I ventured out to check the film out only knowing that Sam Rockwell was supposed to be amazing. I definitely enjoyed this film feeling it worthy of the Not Quite Golden, Ponyboy rating.

Moon is a great Sci-fi Drama!

Sam Bell (Rockwell) is an astronaut working on the end of his three-year contract on the Moon with his computer buddy GERTY (Kevin Spacey) where he collects resources that has helped the energy crisis on Earth and sends them back. Sam is out on his routine mission, but manages to wreck a rover after he gets a bit distracted. He wakes up in the infirmary and seems a bit off, which is when the story gets really interesting.

Moon on the Moon - Berk Reviews

I am happy to report that after seeing Moon I am a bigger Sam Rockwell fan than I was before it started. He is fantastic as always and even in this somewhat somber toned movie his wit finds its way in. This movie is heavy on isolation as he is the lone human on this Moon-base. While GERTY, Spacey does a good job with this role even though its rather small, is a much more lively companion than Wilson, It is still a movie featuring one actor on-screen for most of it. Rockwell is easily able to carry the film on his shoulders and the story fits his personality quite well.

Moon GERTY - Berk ReviewsDuncan Jones directed this film as well as the “Source Code” and the upcoming summer release of “Warcraft.” I really like his ability to tell interesting Sci-fi stories like “Moon” and “Source Code.” It’s been a while since I last watched “Source Code,” but I remember enjoying it and thinking it was a fairly original idea. I do remember feeling it wasn’t perfect, but I enjoyed it. That’s basically how I felt about “Moon,” although I think the production values were the only real issues.

Moon SPOILERS AHEAD

The best part of the film was the double dose of Sam Rockwell. After the accident when Sam Bell wakes up in the infirmary GERTY immediately tells him that he has some short-term memory loss. It’s implied that Bell is extremely weak and no explanation is offered as to how he got back from the crash. As things go it is revealed that this Sam Bell isn’t the original Sam Bell the film started with as both are now on-screen after new Sam Bell rescues the other. We need get to see Rockwell play basically two different versions of the same character. He nails it.

Moon wrap-up!

I definitely recommend you check this film out if you are a fan of Sam Rockwell, interesting stories, and scary acting computers that remind you of 2001. Rockwell shines in this film for sure, but the story is extremely well crafted and interesting.
