Review 107: Demolition (2015)

Jake Gyllenhaal has been one of my favorites for a while. I saw the trailer for Demolition and knew I was going to see it. I had to travel to Lakeland in order to see it, but it was definitely worth it. I really enjoyed the film and had to really decide what to rate it, but I’ve decided this falls into Not Quite Golden, Ponyboy and is one I will definitely be watching again at some point.

Demolition Summary

Demolition - Poster

Davis Mitchell (Jake Gyllenhaal) struggles with the loss of his wife after a tragic car accident. He elicits a new friendship as a result of writing a series of letters to a vending machine company and discovers a desire to break apart and analyze broken things in his life.

Gyllenhaal is very compelling in this film and I loved his on screen performance. The scene in the trailer where he is dancing in the street is one of my favorite moments. The cinematography of the scene is great as Gyllenhaal is moving forward through the crowd, the crowd is moving backwards. It’s a great visual and just a fun scene.

demolition - danceNaomi Watts, Chris Cooper, C.J. Wilson, Judah Lewis, and Heather Lind all have major roles in the film with Watts and Lewis being my favorite supporting characters. Davis and Chris (Lewis) have some of my favorite moments. Their connection shows the childlike state that Davis has reverted to with a child like curiosity of the world he lives in. Karen (Watts) is the vending machine customer service employee who reaches out to Davis and their connection is deep.

Demolition - Jake GyllenhaalThe movie is sad at times, but very interesting and thought provoking. Davis doesn’t’ feel the way he believes he should and the way society expects him to feel. How he deals with this and the reasons for this lack of reaction is an intriguing character study. I definitely enjoyed this film and hope others can find connection with the character.
