The Conjuring and The Conjuring 2 were both very great. Annabelle Creation is the newest entry into the Conjuring Universe, yes there is ANOTHER universe. Despite not seeing the first one, the addition of director David F. Sandberg, who directed last year’s successful Lights Out, drew me into the theater. It’s a successful entry into the Conjuring Universe for sure and fans of The Conjuring should check it out.
Annabelle: Creation is a solid entry in the Conjuring Universe.
A Samuel Mullins (Anthony LaPaglia), a dollmaker, and Esther Mullins (Miranda Otto) daughter is killed in a tragic accident. Twelve years later, the Mullins invite a girl’s orphanage to live in their farmhouse. It’s not long after moving in that Janice (Talitha Bateman) starts witnessing unexplainable phenomenon.
Sandberg definitely has a strong understanding of tone and atmosphere. He creates a world and setting that is terrifying even when nothing is happening. The audience is on edge even when nothing is happening. His use of shadow is extremely strong and creates lots of opportunities for scares. Though, he doesn’t rely on the jump scares which makes for an enjoyable experience.
The cast performs very well. It is heavily young actors and Bateman and Lulu Wilson stand out. The two have a lot of chemistry and really sell the horror. The origin story of Annabelle is interesting though slightly confusing in some ways. That’s one of the weaker elements of the film and a downside of serving a universe and not the film itself.
Overall, the movie was a solid horror experience. It’s got some cool moments and a great cast. Sandberg has a strong grasp of the genre and hopefully a promising career. Annabelle: Creation earns the Decent Watch rating.
