Movie Review: Don’t Breathe (2016)
If you listen to the Top 5 Podcast, you already know I am a HUGE fan of Fede Alvarez’s 2013 re-imagining of Evil Dead. I was extremely excited to see he had a new film coming out in August. I headed to the theater to check out horror/thriller Don’t Breathe. Unfortunately it was a big disappointment. I give it the rating: Avoid Like the Plague.
Don’t Breathe was disappointing!
The cast is comprised of actors I have seen before (and enjoyed in those other roles.) Jane Levy plays Rocky. She was also the main character Mia in that Evil Dead re-imagining I mentioned earlier. She was the weakest link in this film. Her acting was robotic and for most of the film unbelievable.
Dylan Minnette (Goosebumps, Let Me In) is Alex. If you can have a “most likeable” out of a group of robbers it would be him. Daniel Zoratto (It Follows) is Money. Stephen Lang is The Blind Man.
The more I think about this film the more ridiculous I think it is. Jon (from Berk’s Reviews, duh – his review is here) and I had a short conversation on this film. We surprisingly see eye to eye on it- that doesn’t happen often! I didn’t realize how much this movie mimics 80’s slashers until he mentioned it. The thing this movie doesn’t get right is it lacks the suspense those movies had. Further, I believe the director is trying to make his viewers feel compassion and empathy for these kids that broke into someone’s home. No.
The movie is only an hour and a half. It felt much longer than that. It should have ended so many times but no- let’s have it take another impossible turn.
I would definitely say leave the kids at home for this one. You might also want to sit this one out of you are squeamish. There was a part in the film I was pretty sure I was going to throw up- I have a pretty strong stomach!
I don’t think this one even deserves a Redbox rental. Don’t waste your time. Don’t waste your money.
