I am a huge Sam Rockwell fan. There’s something about him that just makes me laugh at most of the jokes. When I heard about Mr. Right I knew I needed to see it as he co-stars with Anna Kendrick. I rented it from Redbox and wasn’t disappointed. I give Mr. Right the rating Not Quite Golden, Ponyboy.
Martha McKay (Anna Kendrick) just went through a pretty bad break-up. She runs into Mr. Right (Sam Rockwell) at a convenient store and, despite knowing better, falls for him pretty quickly. He told her he was a hitman who now kills the people who hires him, but she just thought he was kidding. She finds herself in a very unusual situation and not sure what to do next.
Max Landis wrote this film and that wasn’t a plus going in. He wrote American Ultra and Chronicle, but I think this may have been his best. The film is directed by Paco Cabezas who manages to do a decent job with the action sequences. They’re not perfect, but do integrate a bullet time type effect that is pretty interesting to the character and the plot.
Anna Kendrick is so insane in this film and I loved it. She had me cracking up throughout the film and she looked like she was having a blast. Sam Rockwell is perfect. He plays the action hero and the romantic very well all while bringing his usual brand of sarcastic comedy. The two working together were great on-screen. The two alone would have been enough, but the film has some other great cast members.
Tim Roth usually makes a movie better
Tim Roth plays the hitman hired to take out Rockwell’s character. He is undercover as a FBI officer for part of the film and the accents he uses to back his cover are pretty funny. I’m a fan of Tim Roth so seeing him in this film was another great aspect. Rza was the shocker to me as his character Steve has some of the funniest lines in the film. Especially when they give him a crappy shotgun to go after this insanely talented hitman. His reactions are pretty great.
I don’t think this is a film for everyone, but it feels like it was made for me. Two actors lead the film that I love and in a style that I enjoy. Action comedy with a solid love story is in my wheelhouse. If you’re a fan of either actor or actress I say give this film a chance.
