As mentioned in the Top Five Heist Movies, I’d never seen Bottle Rocket. Corey got it for me as an early birthday present. I’m hoping to watch the other Wes Anderson films I’ve not seen before the challenge completes so it seemed like this one made sense. I really enjoyed Bottle Rocket giving it the Not Quite Golden, Ponyboy rating.
Anthony Adams (Luke Wilson) teams up with his friend Dignan (Owen Wilson) and Bob Mapplethorpe (Robert Musgrave) to pull off a simple robbery. After their “success” they go on the run until they can pull of the next job that will really up the ante.
I am a fan of Wes Anderson and this story is really fun. It’s not his best movie, but it’s really cool seeing his beginnings. The story here is really what shines as it is a Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson take on a heist movie. It contains quirky characters that are really out of their element, but seem to be oblivious to that fact.
Owen and Luke give two of my favorite performances of theirs in this film. They really seem like they are having a great time making the movie. Robert Musgrave was new to me, but I liked his character in the story. My favorite part of the film was the b-story between Inez (Lumi Cavazos) and Anthony. It is a sweet love story that fits in nicely to the rest of the story.
I haven’t seen too many heist films, but I do seem to enjoy the comedic styled ones. That made Bottle Rocket work for me. The beats are there, but in a scaled down way. James Caan showing up was a pleasant surprise though. If you are a fan of Wes Anderson and the Wilsons then you’ll likely enjoy this film.
