Swingers is a Jon Favreau film that has been on my must watch list for a while. I’ve heard great things about it and I just kept putting it off. I finally decided to get the viewing of the film completed. I give Swingers the rating of Not Quite Golden, Ponyboy.
Swingers baby! It’s money!
Mike (Jon Favreau) is still on the rebound even though it has been sixth months since his break up. Trent (Vince Vaughn) brings Mike out to the neo-lounge scene and tries to teach him the unwritten rules of the scene and dating life.
I’m a big fan of Favreau’s writing style. I’ve enjoyed most films that he is in and that he has written, but Vince Vaughn’s character in Swingers and Made are among the most annoying characters I can remember seeing on film. He uses the word “Baby” way too often and to describe both women he wants to sleep with and his close friends like Mike. He is funny in this film though and his behavior clearly irritates Mike as much as it did me so I assume that was the intent of Vaughns character.
All the references!
The film makes lots of other film references as the guys are all trying to make it as actors. I loved the reference to Reservoir Dogs and Goodfellas. There is a scene where the guys are walking in the back room of a club and it’s a long take reminiscent of Goodfellas. Doug Liman did an excellent job directing this film and there are some really great shots.
I was excited to see Ron Livingston playing Rob. He is Mike’s friend who is also trying to make it as an actor, but is much more grounded than Trent and Sue (Patrick Van Horn). I’m a huge fan of Office Space so seeing Ron Livingston in a film is always a bonus for me. I also really like the conversations Mike and Rob have in the film. Heather Graham shows up a for a little while yet makes a big impact. Her storyline mimics my favorite scene in the film. Mike demonstrates what happens if a guy doesn’t follow the “wait for two days to call” rule.
I definitely enjoyed this film quite a bit. Favreau has a great style that I’ve become a big fan of over the years. If you’re a fan like I am then this is definitely one you’ll want to check out. If you have seen it, love to hear your opinion in the comments.
