Bobby De Niro took his years of experience and decided to be an intern. We stopped in at Publix today and my wife grabbed The Intern, which has 60% on Rotten Tomatoes, from Redbox. After an early dinner (or late lunch) we sat down to watch it.

141452_frontBen Whittaker (Robert De Niro) becomes an intern for Jules (Anne Hathaway) at her online clothing company, About the Fit. Jules is initially resistant to having an intern, much less an old guy intern, but Ben’s charm and talent starts to win her over. Jules is faced with pressure about hiring a veteran CEO and seeks Ben’s advice on what to do about that and problems in her life.

The movie has some funny moments and has some touching scenes. De Niro probably plays the nicest character I can remember seeing him portray on screen. His interactions with other interns and employees (Adam Devine, Zack Pearlman, Jason Orley, and Christina Scherer to name a few) are both comical and sentimental. The trailer made it seem like the old guy would get mocked more, but he seems to inspire everyone quickly as they see he truly knows his stuff.

The-InternAnne Hathaway gets to flip roles from her character in Devil Wears Prada and is in charge of the interns. While she is nowhere near as mean as Meryl Streep is, she still doesn’t respect the idea of an old intern. The chemistry between Hathaway and De Niro is great. There is definitely a father/daughter connection between the two that works well for this story.

theintern2The silliest scene in the movie is De Niro leading the goof squad to enter into Jules’s mom’s house and delete an email where Jules called her some names. Finding a key to get in proves more of a challenge than expected, an alarm goes off, and mayhem ensues. The whole scene is a bit over the top, but is the only moment in the movie that plays out like this. The rest of the jokes in the film are a bit more subtle and natural.

I’d say The Intern was a solid comedy that feels a bit more like a . I don’t regret watching it and if it’s on TV I probably wouldn’t’ change the channel. I think The Intern is A Decent Watch
