I’ve discovered a few things about movies this year already. I like a good western, I am very much about story, and if journalism is part of the story I’m likely sold. When I saw the trailer for Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, which has a 60% on Rotten Tomatoes, I was determined to see it opening weekend. Since I managed to get in to the movie today, I figured why not post it today for my readers.
Kim Baker (Tina Fey) is a journalist who ventures into Afghanistan to be a foreign correspondent to escape her mundane routine. Her life is instantly changed as she makes new friends, risks her life, and tries to keep her sanity in the insane, war-stricken world.
Tina Fey delivers her best performance that I can recall on screen. Her character is witty, garners empathy, and is clearly a driven individual. Martin Freeman plays a Scottish photographer named Iain MacKelpie who slightly overshadows Fey. The two work terrifically together on screen and manage to create a compelling b-story.
Along with Fey and Freeman the film features Margot Robbie, Alfred Molina, Billy Bob Thorton, Nicholas Braun, and Christopher Abbott. All of the performances were strong, with my surprise favorite being Billy Bob Thorton who managed to play enough of a hard-ass Marine to be believable, but manages to also be human. Sometimes, I feel military figures in films are too one-dimensional, but Thorton manages to really flesh out the character even with minimal screen time.
Fahim Ahmadzai (Abbott) is a significant character to the film as he is a translator and friend to Baker. The story between the two characters is interesting and what he chooses to leave out in translation is often a solid source of comedy.
Fey manages to demonstrate a character who is going through a sort of midlife crisis and manages to find herself in another world yet manages to stay somewhat grounded. While she does partake in some debauchery she still seems to be the one in the most control.
I definitely enjoyed the film. The story is very interesting, and Fey delivers on every emotional level whether it be comedic, sad, or exhilarating. I definitely feel that Whiskey Tango Foxtrot is a Solid Movie and if you get a chance check it out.
